I had trouble unmolding my first cake with NordicWare's Wildflower Pan, so I contacted the company for help. They advise using Crisco and Wondra flour. Although I prefer butter, the Crisco worked far better, but I took extra time to use a pastry brush to apply the Crisco to ensure getting into every nook and cranny. I did not like the recipe that came with the pan, so I asked about additional recipes. The only response was to use a standard cake mix. This was not very satisfying, as I prefer from-scratch cakes. However, I do sometimes use a cake mix that I "doctor up," and have been pleased with the results. Even the addition of grated citrus rind in a glaze can disturb the lovely pattern of the cake, and even a thin glaze must be applied very carefully, or the flower petals will break up.
