(More customer reviews)I'm currently trying to learn the One Stroke method, with variable results (CAN'T get that darned ruffled leaf!). I have a few of the books, and bought this video so that I could actually watch the strokes being made.
Dewberry is a very good instructor, and has an accessible style, which is usually clear. She also drops little nuggets of information not readily found in her printed materials. The main thing about this video is that it goes like the wind - she covers pretty much the whole technique, using 6 different brush styles, in about 45 minutes! Example; she spends about 2 minutes on reverse painting on glass, which is kind of complicated. Be prepared to pause and replay a LOT! Directions for the various strokes can be found in any of her larger books. I bought the Techniques book at the same time, and found that it doesn't correlate exactly, which is kind of annoying. But it is helpful to see someone actually do the strokes, since I've somehow managed to miss the entire run of the TV show. Like the Techniques book, there are no directions for specific projects on the video.
There is some hyping of the various Plaid Folk Art products, but it turns out that you DO need to actually use their brand of paint, instead of substituting cheaper ones - believe me, I've tried! It's because the paint needs to be a fairly thick formulation in order to blend the way it's supposed to. The list given onscreen of all the supplies you'll need can be a little daunting. But since in the last segment Dewberry covers various finishing techniques, like crackling and antiquing, you can ignore some items unless you want to do that specific finish. You don't even need to have all the colors of paint she uses to just practice the strokes. You will need the various brushes, though - at least 3 for starters (flat, scruffy, liner).
Bottom line; this program is well worth the money, if you're having trouble making sense of the printed directions, or want an overview of the One Stroke technique. But if you want to learn One Stroke, DO plan to also buy at least one book, unless you're already an experienced painter, and just need to see the specifics to master the technique.
