A medium size deciduous shrub to small tree to about 8-10' tall and wide. It is grown for its deep reddish purple foliage and strange, attractive flower clusters, which are wispy, thread like, and suspended above the foliage like puffs of smoke. The leaves usually lighten in color somewhat in summer, though this varies from plant to plant. One of the best plants for fall color, even in cool areas, though color is much stronger where summer heat ripens the wood. Planted in the sun gives the best leaf color, both during the growing season and during the fall, but it will take part shade and fall color can still be quite nice there. It needs regular to almost no summer watering when established and is very frost hardy.
