(More customer reviews)I was not sure what to do with all my trees over the winter. I made a mistake and forgot to water my 40 year old ficus which has an amazing 10 inch trunk. I also have been babying my serissa for about 8 years and have had many sections die off. I knew my main problem was that they were not getting the right amount of light over the winter in the north east parts of Massachusetts. This year I decided I would build a bonsai hospital. First I had to sort out an area that my darn plant eating cat could not get into. Then I ordered this light. I went a few steps further and went to my local home hardware store and bought a set of 2" PVC pipes and fittings making a jig to hold the light up about 5 feet off the ground. Then I put the light on a timer and ended up not only reviving my 40 year old ficus, but my serissa looks better than it does after a warm bright wet summer! I even put my herbs and my orchids under it and all in all this saved my entire plant collection for the winter. I do recommend making a stand of sorts. I used 2 "T" fittings for the legs and the risers, then 2 elbows for the pipe that spans between the feet and drilled two holes in them inserting hooks through them so I could suspend the light. It all breaks down for summer storage and I am sooooo happy with the results. Also, this thing throws out so much light you can't even look into it, yet it uses so little energy! Its like having a 125 watt bulb on, so yes it uses some, but you will (more importantly your plants) will love love love it!!UPDATE: This summer my plants are doing better than ever. My orchid I mentioned above even flowered!!! First time ever since I got it. This winter they will all be pampered again under this light.

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased one of these for a bonsai tree that I received as a gift. I already had a couple of light bulbs for growing indoors, but they weren't giving my tree (a hinoki cypress that's about a foot tall) adequate light. The leaves were getting pale and it didn't seem like it was thriving. Several bonsai websites recommended this light, so after browsing for a while I ordered one from a hydroponics supply company. No matter where you order from, you will end up spending around $30 for this kit (cost plus shipping). The lampshade is highly reflective and focuses all the light into one small area, which is ideal for growing a single plant as I am. The bulb is broad spectrum and simulates natural daylight. The bulb itself is pretty small and doesn't put out too much heat, so you can place it fairly close to the plant without causing harm. I like that the lamp is clip-on. I put a wooden pole vertical next to my plant, so I can adjust the angle of the light on different days to ensure my plant gets even lighting. Already my little tree seems much happier. The leaves seem to be returning to the lush green color they were when I first got the tree from the nursery (it was an outdoor tree). My apartment faces north and I get no natural sunlight through my windows, so it is imperative that I supply the tree with adequate light. If you are growing a larger plant, or several smaller ones, I would definitely recommend the 150W kit. While this lamp suits my purpose well, the total light output is a little weak. Remember that it's only a 60W bulb. Think of it as a spotlight ("dayspot") for a small plant, such as in the picture.

(More customer reviews)I am going to make this simple. I have this unit, a fixture with an Incandescent grow bulb matching the comparative rated wattage this unit states, and a CFL growth light matching the comparative wattage as well.
I have all three surrounding a set of four plants. In a kind of triangle format, meaning one third of the plants space covered by incandescent on third covered by CFL and one third by this unit all pretty much as symmetric as possible. All of the bulbs and fixtures are professional grade.
All the plants lean to this light. No matter how I do it. I switch locations the plants follow this unit. I move this one to an odd position within a day the plants follow.
So I took the other two out (CFL and incandescent) and replaced them with two more of these. And WOW! The growth was exponential.
I will never go back to incandescent or CFL. I have four more of these type units, larger sizes, on order now.

(More customer reviews)Just received and assembled this product today. I'm not sure why others have posted about poor quality and flimsy construction of this product. I am very satisfied with the construction and sturdiness. This product is exactly what I expected for the price, product description, and pictures.
I did notice that there are 3 very similar hydrofarm 4 foot grow systems listed on amazon, with a $15 price-range difference. This is the most expensive of the three. The only difference I can tell from the written description is that this product is described as having a premium light fixture. The pictures look the same. One of the other 4 foot hydrofarm systems received a few positive reviews.
Assembly required a philips head screwdriver, pair of pliers, and about 5 minutes of my time. One screw is used to connect each of the two vertical supports to the base cross-bars. Due to the shape and construction of the parts, this fit is tight and secure. Then each of the vertical side bars slips into the top piece (metal button is pressed and then releases into a hole on the top piece). Then you attach the light fixture itself, by hooking nylon string with s hooks attached to the top to either end of the light fixture. Pliers are used to close s hooks. The light is raised and lowered with the nylon string, very similar to a heavy venetian blind. It would be nice if the nylon string were a tad thicker, but it is sufficient for the job.
Overall, I am very happy with this product and would recommend it.
